What is Aricept

Aricept is used to treat mild to moderate malaise caused by Alzheimer's disease.

Aricept (donepezil) improves neuronal function in the brain. It works by preventing the chemical breakdown called acetylcholine (aH SEET il KOE leen). People with dementia usually have low levels of this chemical that is important for memory, thinking and argumentation processes. ARICEPT (donepezil hydrochloride) is a reversible inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, known chemically as (±)-2, 3-dihydro-5, 6-dimethoxy-2- [[1-(phenyl methyl)-4-piperidinyl] methyl]-1Hinden- 1-one hydrochloride. Donepezil hydrochloride is commonly referred to in the pharmacological literature as E2020. It has an empirical formula of C24H29NO3HCl and a molecular weight of 415.96. Donepezil hydrochloride is a white crystalline powder and is freely soluble in chloroform, soluble in water and in glacial acetic acid, slightly soluble in ethanol and in acetonitrile, and practically insoluble in ethyl acetate and in n-hexane. This drug is an enzyme blocker that works by rebuilding the balance of natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

Aricept is not a treatment for Alzheimer's disease. This situation progresses over time, even in people taking donepezil.

Donepezil is used to treat Alzheimer's Disease (dementia). It does not cure Alzheimer's disease, but it may improve memory, awareness and ability to function.

Dosage of Aricept

Dose in mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease

The recommended initial dose of ARICEPT is 5 mg once a day, taken daily, just before retirement. The maximum recommended dose of ARICEPT in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease is 10 mg per day. A dose of 10 mg should not be given until patients have a daily dose of 5 mg per 4-6 weeks.

Dosage in moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease

The recommended initial dose of ARICEPT is 5 mg once a day, taken daily, just before retirement. The maximum recommended dose of ARICEPT in moderate to severe Alzheimer's patients is 23 mg per day. A dose of 10 mg should not be given until patients have a daily dose of 5 mg per 4-6 weeks. A dose of 23 mg / day should not be given to the patient at least 3 months a day, 10 mg / day.

Administration information

ARICEPT should be taken at night before retirement. ARICEPT can be taken with or without food.

ARICEPT 23 mg should not be divided, crushed or chewed.

Let ARICEPT ODT be solved in the language and follow the water.

Symptoms of over dose

As with any prescription, general supportive measures should be used. Excessive administration of cholinesterase inhibitors can lead to cholinergic crisis with severe nausea, vomiting, sweating, saliva, bradycardia, hypertension, respiratory depression, decay and seizure. Increased muscle weakness is possible and if the respiratory muscles are involved, it can lead to death.  It is recommended that the initial dose of 1.0 to 2.0 mg IV with subsequent doses is recommended based on the clinical response. Unusual responses to blood pressure and heart rate have been reported with other cholinomimetic agents with quaternary anticholinergics such as glycopyrrolate. It is unclear whether ARICEPT or its metabolites can be removed by dialysis (hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or hemophilia). Secondary anticholinergics, such as atropine, may be used as an antidote for over-consumption of ARICEPT.
