What is Trazodone

Trazodone is used to treat major depressive disorder.

Trazodone is an antidepressant medicine. These chemicals affect the brain, which may be unbalanced in people with depression. DESYREL (trazodone hydrochloride) is an antidepressant chemically unrelated to tricyclic, tetracyclic, or other known antidepressant agents.

How to use Trazodone?

The trazodone immediate-release tablet should be taken after a meal or a snack.

Take Oleptro on an empty stomach at bedtime or late in the evening.

You may break an Oleptro tablet in half along the score line if needed.

It may take up to 2 weeks before your symptoms improve.

Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow it whole. Keep using the drug as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not get better.

Dosage of Trazodone

Usual Adult Dose of Trazodone for Depression:

Initial dose: 150 mg per day in divided doses.

Trazodone should be taken shortly after a meal or light snack.

Usual Geriatric Dose of Trazodone for Depression:

Immediate-release tablets:

Initial dose: 150 mg per day in divided doses.

Extended-release tablets:

Recommended starting dose: 150 mg once daily

Maintenance dose: The dose may be increased by 75 mg/day every three days (for example, start 225 mg on day 4 of therapy).

Maximum daily dose: 375 mg

Usual Pediatric Dose for Depression:

Immediate-release tablets:

6 to 12 years:

Initial dose: 1.5 to 2 mg/kg/day in divided doses.

Maintenance dose: May increase up to 6 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses.

Greater than 12 years to 18 years:

Initial dose: 25 to 50 mg per day.

Maintenance dose: May increase up to 100 to 150 mg per day in divided doses.

Symptoms of over dose

Excessive consumption of trazodone may be fatal when consumed with alcohol, barbiturates, such as phenobarbital or tranquilizers such as diazepam (a valium).

Symptoms of administration may include severe drowsiness, pain in the penis or prolonged periods, vomiting, fast heart beat or palpitations, seizure (blackness or seizure), or breathing that stops or stops.

Side effects of Trazodone

Severe nervous system reaction - very stiff (rigid) muscles, high fever, sweating, confusion, rapid or uneven heartbeat, tremor, feeling like you may be erased.

Common side effects of Trazodone may include:

Drowsiness, dizziness;

Vision changes

Constipation; or

Dry mouth has altered the sensitivity of the taste.

Drugs that may interact with Trazodone

Many drugs can interact with trazodone. Not all probable interactions are listed here. Consult your doctor about all your drugs and any you start or stop using during your treatment, especially:

any other antidepressant;

methadone;

anagrelide;

ondansetron;

droperidol;

anti-malaria medication--chloroquine, halofantrine;

an antibiotic--azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, pentamidine;

cancer medicine--arsenic trioxide, vandetanib;

heart rhythm medicine--amiodarone, disopyramide, dofetilide, dronedarone, flecainide, biotinide, quinidine, sotalol; or

medicine to treat a psychiatric disorder--chlorpromazine, haloperidol, pimozide, thioridazine.

This list is not a complete list and many other drugs can interact with trazodone.

For whom Trazodone might not be safe

If you are not allergic to it or if you are being treated with methylene diamine, do not use trazodone.

Do not use trazodone in the past 14 days if you are using a MAO inhibitor. Dangerous drug interactions may occur. MAO inhibitors include isoccarbazole, linzolide, phenolsin, razgelin, sulginin and tranylcypromine. After taking the drug, take the medicine at least 14 days before starting the supplement, you should wait.

To ensure that trazodone is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have a medicine:

Liver or kidney disease;

Heart disease;

A bleeding or blood clotting disorder;

Seizure or epilepsy;

Angular glaucoma;

Bipolar disorder (manic depression);

Long history of QT syndrome;

History of drug use or suicidal ideation; or

If you have recently had a heart attack

Some young people will commit suicide when they develop antidepressants. While you are using trazodone, your doctor should check your progress on regular visits. Your family or other carers should also consider changes in mood or signs.

Trazodone while pregnancy?

Using anti-depressant drugs during pregnancy may cause serious lung problems or other complications in the baby. However, if you are taking antidepressants, you may experience a recurrence of depression. If you are taking Trazodone, tell your doctor quickly. Do not start or use your medication during pregnancy without consulting your doctor.

There are no adequate and controlled studies in pregnant women. DESYREL (Trazodone Hydrochloride) should be used during pregnancy only if it justifies the potential risk of developing fetuses.

DESYREL (trazodone hydrochloride) has been shown to increase the absorption of fetuses and other side effects in the fetus in two studies using rat at about 12 to 12 times the maximum human maximum. Also, in cases where one of the three rabbit studies was about 15 to 50 times the highest level of human obstruction, congenital pomegranates also increased.

Warnings of Trazodone

Trazodone may cause a disease that affects the heart rhythm (prolonged QT). Long QT can rarely cause severe (rarely fatal) rapid / irregular heartbeat and other symptoms (such as severe dizziness, fainting) that require medical attention right away.

The risk of having a QT duration may increase if you have special medical conditions or other medications that may prolong QT.
